Racers Fall to Salukis in Doubleheader

MSU drops two games at SIU.
The Murray State Racers (19-25, 9-14 MVC) fell to the Southern Illinois Salukis (29-17, 19-3 MVC) in a pair of games on Saturday in Carbondale, Ill. Â
With the wins, Southern Illinois remains atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings while the Racers fall to ninth.Â
Game One
Southern Illinois got on top early in the first game as Jackie Lis hit a first-inning RBI single that scored Anna Carder. Addi Baker added one more in the third with an RBI single of her own to give the Salukis a 2-0 lead.Â
Katy Huels provided a spark for the Racers in the fourth inning with an RBI single to right center that scored Erin Lacker and cut the deficit to just 2-1. However, the Salukis continued to score, putting up three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth on their way to a 7-1 game one win. Â
Murray State scored one run on seven hits and committed one error, a sixth-inning fielding error. SIU scored seven runs on ten hits and committed two errors, a throwing error in the first and a fielding error in the fourth. Â
Katy Huels led the Racers at the plate, going 2-4 with a pair of singles and an RBI. Kenley Minor, Ailey Schyck, Kayleigh White, Erin Lackey, and Riley Jestadt each added one hit and Minor had one stolen base.Â
Bre Haislip (6-11) took the loss in the circle, pitching five innings and allowing eight hits, five earned runs, and striking out two. Raylee Roby pitched one inning in relief, allowing two hits, two earned runs, and striking out one. Â
McKenzie Newcomb (17-5) got the win in relief for the Salukis, allowing four hits and striking out four. Anna Carder went 2-2 at the plate with a pair of walks, and Jackie Lis went 3-3 with three RBI. Â
Game Two
Much like in game one, Southern Illinois began game two with a first-inning score. This time it was Jackie Lis with an RBI double that put the Salukis ahead early. They added three more in the third with a pair of home runs from Lis and Mikaela Coburn that put them ahead 4-0. Â
Ailey Schyck got the Racers on the board with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth that scored Kenley Minor and cut the deficit to 4-1. However the Salukis responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding lead. Â
The Racers were unable to stay alive in the fifth inning as they could not score a run, giving the Salukis a 10-1 win. Â
The Racers scored one run on three hits while the Salukis scored ten on ten hits. Neither team committed an error. Â
Ailey Schyck had the Racers' lone RBI while Katy Huels, Kenley Minor, and Parker Holcombe each added a hit. Karlye Graber (7-9) took the loss in the circle after allowing five hits and four earned runs, and striking out four across three innings of work. Â
Kaytee Dahlstrom (8-2) pitched all five innings, allowing one earned run and collecting one strikeout. Jackie Lis went 2-2 at the plate with a pair of RBI. Â
The Racers and Salukis will wrap up their series on Sunday, April 27 at 12:00 p.m. CT at Charlotte West Stadium in Carbondale, Ill. Â
