Racers Earn MVC Baseball Championship & #1 Seed

Murray State Baseball celebrated its first Missouri Valley Conference men's team championship and the first for the program since 1991 Saturday at Johnny Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky.

When the Racers defeated the Missouri State Bears 16-5 Friday night, it assured the Racers of a share of the title and the No. 1 seed in next week's
MVC Tournament in Normal, Illinois (May 20-24).

"We talk about that all the time, we are Thoroughbreds and Racer Family and we are all going to enjoy this today," said Head Coach Dan Skirka when thinking about the 86-year history of MSU Baseball. "Going forward into the tournament, you've heard it this time of year that postseason baseball is crazy and you might see something you've never seen before. But if we manage our emotions and go out and have fun."

The Racers (35-13) finished 17-8 in the MVC games and won their last eight MVC series and shared the regular season title with Missouri State.

The Racers had an amazing run in league play as they started 2-4 and finished 15-4.

Game Notes

The Racers' title is the first men's championship in the Missouri Valley Conference since joining the league in summer 2022.
MSU Baseball follows the Murray State women's tennis team and basketball team as the third league team champion in the MVC.
The Racers have had multiple winners of MVC event titles in women's track & field, tennis and this spring, Trey Wall won the MVC men's golf individual championship.
The win for MSU Baseball is the program's 15th conference title (full or division) and first since the 1991.
Murray State won the 1991 Ohio Valley Conference title that featured MSU Hall of Famers, Coach Johnny Reagan and Kirk Rueter.
Rueter was Pitcher of the Year and drafted by the Montreal Expos and played 13 seasons in the big leagues with the Expos and Giants.
MSU's league titles include: Full League Titles: 1958, 1959, 1961, 1991. Divisional Titles: 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1985
