Racer Basketball 2011-12 - A Special Season
|
|
The Murray State men's basketball squad had a season to remember in 2011-12. Simply put, it was the greatest season in the 87-year history of the program. MSU's 31-2 campaign had so many records and program firsts, it was amazing how it all gathered speed from game one all the way to the Racers being the final undefeated team in NCAA Division I basketball at 23-0. After MSU lost their first game, they quickly regained their momentum and played some great basketball all the way to the NCAA Tournament. |
MSU had their highest national rankings (Feb. 9) when they were No. 7 in the ESPN/USA Today Poll and No. 9 in the Associated Press Poll in the week of Feb. 9. The unbeaten streak set the OVC record for best start to a season and longest win streak.
The season was enjoyed by Racer fans all over the world. As the wins kept coming, so did the national attention as MSU became the media darling in the 2011-12 season.
MSU Basketball was certainly the team and Murray, Ky., was the place that everyone wanted to know more about. Even ESPN's Dick Vitale made a visit to MSU to see the Racers first hand.
Fans flocked to the CFSB Center in record numbers as the Racers ended the season with six straight sellouts. It was the Racer Nation that made the difference, as they were a big reason Vitale made a visit to the Racers' home court. MSU appeared on live television 23 times this season.
The Racers won their 23rd Ohio Valley Conference championship and 15th OVC Tournament title which led them into their highest seed in their 15th trip to the NCAA Tournament. No. 6 Murray State defeated No. 11 Colorado State in their first game before they bowed out in a loss to No. 3 seed Marquette.
There are so many memories and you've come to the right place to relive the best of the 2011-12 season.
