Current Student-Athletes - Class Attendance Policy

Attending class regularly and on time is expected for ALL courses in which you are enrolled as a student-athlete at Murray State University. You are required to attend all classes regardless of the professor’s attendance policies. Unexcused absences are considered: any class you leave early without approval; or miss without notifying your academic counselor and receiving approval prior to missing the class.
Academic Counselors routinely gather information regarding missed classes. Consequences for unexcused absences are determined on a case by case basis and are specifically intended to speak to the severity of the matter as it relates to the individual student-athlete and his/her academic history and performance.
Consequences for unexcused absences could include any or all of the following:
Criteria to be considered when determining appropriate disciplinary action for unexcused absences:

- Student-athlete will be placed on a “watch” list that triggers additional class checks
- Team discipline as determined by the Head Coach
- Required participation in academic mentor program
- Additional study hall hours
- Suspension from practice
- Suspension from competition
- Community service
- Loss/reduction of athletic aid
- Loss/reduction of summer school aid
- Loss/reduction of 5th year aid
- Loss of eligibility to compete at Murray State University and dismissal from team
Criteria to be considered when determining appropriate disciplinary action for unexcused absences:
- Total number of unexcused absences reported
- Academic history and/or performance while at Murray State
- Academic history and/or performance while at previous institutions
- Approach and/or attitude toward academic success
- Number of failed, repeated and/or dropped courses
- Importance of class attendance on declared major
- Most recent semester GPA
- Overall GPA
- Study hall attendance records
- Impact on teams APR score
- Impact on individual eligibility and satisfactory progress
- Individual team/coach policy
- Additional, relevant information provided by professor
- Other disciplinary matters related to student-athlete
