Murray State Alcohol Policy & Information
Murray State Athletics, in conjunction with University, local and state officials, will begin a pilot program for the sale of select alcoholic beverages at Racer football home games beginning in the 2024 athletic season. Fans will have the opportunity to purchase beer, seltzers and other offerings at select concessions stands throughout the Roy Stewart Stadium concourse.
The following regulations will be in place for all alcohol transactions made at Murray State football events or events at Roy Stewart Stadium where alcohol is available for purchase:
Â
A: With this pilot program in place, Murray State joins all other Division I institutions in Kentucky, and its peers in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, as programs that sell alcohol within their football venues on game day.
Q: Alcohol has not been available for purchase at Murray State Athletics events in the past. Why the change now?
A: The game day experience for our fans is one of our top priorities. This is a new addition to the game day experience and we felt that it was important to evaluate how this affected the home atmosphere and game day operations at other schools in the state of Kentucky and in the Missouri Valley Conference and Missouri Valley Football Conference. Over the last few years, fans have come to expect beer as an amenity at entertainment events, so we felt like it was the right time to make this change.
Â
Q: How will alcohol sales be managed?
A: Alcohol sales will be managed by Sodexo, the University’s resident dining and retail food service provider. We worked closely with campus leadership, as well as Sodexo, and leadership at the local and state levels, to make sure that these policies and procedures are done in a manner that will allow alcohol to be purchased and consumed in a legal and safe manner.
Â
Q: Are you concerned that some fans will no longer come to games because of alcohol sales?
A: Our goal is to consistently provide a world-class game day experience and we will continue to work diligently to maintain that standard while making sure that everyone feels comfortable in attending our events.
Â
Q: Will you have an alcohol-free seating section?
A: There is currently no plan on providing alcohol-free seating in Roy Stewart Stadium.
Â
Q: Will you have an evaluation process for fans who appear to be over-served?
A:Â Sodexo provides training for managing alcohol sales in a way that protects the fan experience. Fans who appear to be over-served will be denied service.
Â
Q: You talk about the fan experience, but what about the student-athlete experience? Do you worry that Murray State student-athletes or their opponents could be subject to inappropriate or rude behavior if alcohol were sold during games?
A: We monitor fan behavior at every venue in the interest of a positive experience for everyone involved and that will continue in conjunction with our MSU Police Department partners. Per our fan code of conduct, we encourage all fans to positively support our teams and respect for the opponent.
