No stranger to success in the Ohio Valley Conference, Chris Cole enters his second season as the pitching coach at Murray State.
In his first season with the Breds, Cole was in charge of a pitching staff that returned just 20 innings from the previous season.
The 2011 pitching staff led the OVC with six complete games, and also threw the school’s first two shutouts since the 2009 season.
Senior Jake Donze led the league with his four complete games and ended his career as the school’s all-time leader in games started, while ranking sixth in innings pitched.
Freshman Cameron Finch seized control of the back end of the Breds bullpen as he tallied four saves as a true freshman.
Cole came to MSU after spending the previous four seasons at Tennessee Tech.
Under Cole’s leadership, the TTU pitching staff showed marked improvement every season as the Golden Eagles captured the 2009 OVC Tournament championship and the 2010 OVC Regular Season championship.
In 2010, Cole’s pitching staff led the league, and ranked 12th nationally, in strikeouts, while posting the third lowest ERA, and surrendering the third fewest walks. Two of Cole’s pitchers were named to the all-conference team, with staff ace Lee Henry being named the Pitcher of the Year.
The season marked the second-straight in which Cole’s pitching staff led the league in strikeouts, and the third in which it ranked in the top two in the OVC. Cole has had at least one pitcher named to the all-conference team in each of his four seasons, including having two players in each of the last two seasons.
Cole followed in his father’s footsteps as he began his collegiate career at Florida State, where he made 21 starts in helping the Seminoles reach the Super Regionals in 2001. His father, Chet, was a member of the Seminoles baseball team from 1965-67.
Following his freshman campaign, Cole transferred to Stetson and played two season’s for the Hatters. In two season’s, Cole hit .298 with 15 doubles, 11 home runs and 72 RBIs in helping the Hatters to an 83-43 record and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.
Prior to his collegiate career, Cole was a prep standout at Hernando High School where he was named the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the 3A District 8 Player of the Year as a senior after setting four school records.
Cole received his bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Thomas University in 2006.
Cole married the former Julie Jordan on August 3, 2007, and the couple are the proud parents of sons, Austin Dean Cole, born April 18, 2009, and Levi Jordan Cole, born Dec. 21, 2011.
