Eddie Hunt is in his 10th season as the coach of the Murray State golf program and the future has never looked brighter than it does right now.
Hunt, who took over the MSU program in time for the 2001-2002 season has taken what legendary coach Buddy Hewitt built and raised it to a higher level.
Hunt has attracted exceptional talent to the Murray State program over the years producing 26 All-OVC and All-OVC Tournament Team honors. This list includes senior Cameron Carrico was named OVC Freshman of the Year in 2008.
He has been honored by his coaching peers the last two seasons as the OVC Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010.
In 2007, the Racer Golf program was named to the Golf Digest Top-50 College Golf Programs, MSU was ranked 49th. The magazine rated all collegiate golf programs on more than what goes on a scorecard. Five categories determined the rankings including: team adjusted scoring average, player improvement, academics, climate, and ratings of the head coach and school facilities.
"I can’t take credit for this, because without good student-athletes, a coach can’t do much," Hunt said. "We’ve been able to bring in young men who had a fire in their hearts for the game of golf and they were not only good players, but good people."
A 1966 graduate of Murray State, Hunt spent most of his professional career in the business sector as a co-owner of Dennison-Hunt Sporting Goods in Murray from 1974-2001.
Hunt received a bachelor’s degree in business from Murray State in 1966, then served in the United States Army from 1966-68, serving as an officer in Vietnam from ‘66-’67. Following his military service, Hunt worked in the MSU Student Affairs office and earned his master’s in education in 1969 and then earned a specialist in college teaching degree (SCT) in 1971.
Born and raised in Paducah, Ky., Hunt is married to the former Lanette Underwood of Murray. The couple has two sons, Jason and Jeremy, and two grandchildren, Lindey, 15, and Jay, 9.
