Eddie Hunt is in his 14th season as the coach of the Murray State golf program and it’s in a great position thanks to his efforts and love for the game over the past decade and almost a half.
The Racers are a recent Ohio Valley Conference Champ having won the title in 2010, their first since 1991. The current edition of the Racers is building for another run at the title in April.
Hunt, who took over the MSU program in time for the 2001 2002 season has taken what legendary coach Buddy Hewitt built and raised it to a higher level.
Hunt has attracted exceptional talent to the Murray State program over the years producing 33 All-OVC and All-OVC Tournament Team honors.
Hunt has been honored by his coaching peers twice as the OVC Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2010.
In 2007, the Racer Golf program was named to the Golf Digest Top-50 College Golf Programs with MSU being ranked 49th. The magazine rated all collegiate golf programs on more than what goes on a scorecard. Five categories determined the rankings including: team adjusted scoring average, player improvement, academics, climate, and ratings of the head coach and school facilities.
“I can’t take credit for this, because without good student-athletes, a coach can’t do much,” Hunt said. “We’ve been able to bring in young men who had a fire in their hearts for the game of golf and they were not only good players, but good people.”
As for building a championship program, Hunt passes all the credit to his team that performs well on the course and in the classroom.
“Winning the OVC Championship was the culmination of many years of hard work of the student-athletes in our program. Right now we’re working as hard as we can to get back to the OVC and be in position to win it again,” Hunt said. “I believe that all the student-athletes that have come through our program can feel good about the way this program has stayed strong over the years and has proven to be one of the best in the OVC and in all of college golf,” Hunt said. “We start with the belief that we expect to win and that goes for the classroom as much as the course. We haven’t always reached the top, but having the right attitude and having goals are the main things that push our program to be better.”
The love his players have for Coach Hunt is seen in many ways. One of those is when Eddie holds his annual homecoming golf event every fall. Many former Racers make it a priority to come back and visit.
A 1966 graduate of Murray State, Hunt spent most of his professional career in the business sector as a co-owner of Dennison-Hunt Sporting Goods in Murray from 1974-2001.
Hunt received a bachelor’s degree in business from Murray State in 1966, then served in the United States Army from 1966-68, serving as an officer in Vietnam from ‘66-’67. Following his military service, Hunt worked in the MSU Student Affairs office and earned his master’s in education in 1969 and then earned a specialist in college teaching degree (SCT) in 1971.
Born and raised in Paducah, Ky., Hunt is married to the former Lanette Underwood of Murray. The couple has two sons, Jason and Jeremy, and two grandchildren.
