Dr. Karl F. Hussung, Ph.D. - Faculty Athletics Representative 1969-1998
Dr. Hussung enrolled in Murray State in 1949 and graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry and Mathematics. He was a member of the Murray State basketball team and was select in 1953 to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He attended the University of Louisville from 1953-1957 receiving the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Chemistry.
Dr. Hussung was a Murray State faculty member from September 1957 until January 2000. He served for 39 ½ years as a Professor in the Department of Chemistry during which time he was recognized by the Alumni Association as the 1971 MSU Distinguished Professor; served that year as the President of the Kentucky Academy of Science; and was the first recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award for the College of Science in 1985.Â
His involvement in athletics included among other things: serving 29 years (1969-1998) as MSU’s Faculty Athletics Representative to the OVC and the NCAA; chairing for 15 years the Athletic Scholarship Committee which included signing all Athletic Grant-In-Aids & Scholarship Lists and maintaining the University records pertaining thereto; monitoring for 16 years satisfactory progress for all student-athletes which included maintaining the official University records; determining and certifying the eligibility for each athlete; chairing for 10 years the Intercollegiate Athletic Council; either chairing or serving on the search committees for the Director of Athletics or head coaches in the major revenue producing sports; playing a central role in any institutional inquiries into possible OVC or NCAA rules violations; and administering when required the NCAA Coaches Certification Examination.
