Chuck Shuffett - Radio Announcer 1958-1975 (Deceased)
Chuck Shuffett started is radio career before he ever heard of Murray or the Racers. Sent to call a “game,” which he assumed would be basketball, he called the first football game he had ever witnessed.
When Chuck Shuffett arrived in Murray from Glasgow, Kentucky as the new owner of WNBS-AM, he also took over the daily sports broadcast duties for Murray’s flagship station. When the opportunity to do live basketball games came about, Chuck picked up like a pro and for nearly 20 years, was the accurate, enthusiastic voice of the Racers.
Shuffett's extensive vocabulary and his love of literature gave him the ability to paint with words the pictures his listeners expected. His Racer broadcast career spanned the golden age of MSU Basketball as it jumped from small college status into NCAA D-I.
Leaving the announcer's chair in 1975, Shuffett wrote about the Racers for the monthly magazine, Montage. From opinions to anecdotes, he kept his readers informed with facts and insights about the sports and the teams he loved until Montage ceased publication in 2014.
Even though he traded the microphone for the composer's pen, Shuffett never altered his attachment to Murray State athletics or his respect for the audiences he served.
