Rex Alexander

Dr. Rex Alexander – Basketball and Coach, 1942-1958 (Deceased)
- Rex Alexander was a native of Union County and a 1949 graduate of Murray State.Â
- He lettered in men’s basketball all four years at Murray State and served as team captain his senior year.
- He was Murray State’s fifth men’s basketball head coach in 1954. He held the position for four years. He also coached baseball and tennis and taught math.
- Alexander was manager of the First Region high school basketball tournament for 29 years and president of the Kentucky Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He was the recipient of that organization’s Distinguished Service Award.
- He also received the W.H. Mustaine Award and was also named a distinguished professor by the Murray State Alumni Association in 1976. (The Murray State News, October 20, 2000, Staff Report)
- During his tenure as basketball coach he was 45-54 from 1954-1955 to 1957-1958. His best year was the 1955-1956 season, when he led the Racers to a 15-10 record, winning the Kentucky Invitational Tournament in Louisville. His baseball team was 5-11 in 1955. He went on to serve as Racer basketball assistant coach under Cal Luther from 1958-1965.
