Steve Barrett – Baseball and Basketball, 1971-1974
- One of the top multi-sport stars in Murray State history, Steve Barrett applied his abilities to basketball and baseball in the early 1970's.
- He was a three year starter for the Racer basketball team.
- A guard, Barrett hit an eye-popping 51.6 percent of his field goals and 88.8 percent of his free throws.
- He was even more impressive on the baseball diamond.Â
- As a freshman, Barrett was named All-OVC at second base. He led the ‘Breds with a .388 batting average. He had a streak of seven-straight plate appearances.
- He was named Murray State’s Freshman Athlete of the Year.
- As a sophomore, he again batted .388, leading the team in batting average, slugging percentage (.721), doubles (14), home runs (9) and total bases (93). His slugging percentage, doubles and total bases totals were school records.
- As a junior in 1973, he was honored to be team captain.
- He his a record 11 home runs and drove in a record 42 runs.
- In 1973, was again All-OVCÂ as he helped MSU to its first 30-win season and an OVC division championship.
- As a senior in 1974, Barrett moved to third base and once again gained All-OVC recognition. His play helped MSU win a record 36 games and the OVC Championship, sweeping Morehead State in the conference tournament.
- Barrett left MSU holding numerous school hitting records, as well as the career record for games played (156).Â
- While the latter day MSU sluggers erased many of his records, Barrett is still remembered as one of the first ‘Bred Blasters.
