The win ended the Racers' 12-game winless skid and kept MSU alive for one of the six spots in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in November.
After 90 minutes of close action, the Racers turned things up in the overtime period by holding the Otahkians without a shot in the extra frame.
MSU only had one shot in the extra period, but the Racers made it count as Robertson took a perfect corner kick from junior midfielder Lauren McAdams and headed it past SEMO goalkeeper Amanda Wrzos for the goal at the 97:39 mark of the game.
"It feels unbelievable, like a gorilla's been lifted off our back," said Robertson in reference to the winless streak. "We kept getting closer and closer and it feels great to get a win like this."
The Racers' were outshot by the Otahkians 17-9, but senior goalkeeper Karen Fitzharris made up the difference turning away all six SEMO shots on goal for her second win of the season.
"Our team played really, really hard today," said fourth-year MSU head coach Mike Minielli. "We gained a lot of confidence all day long. The biggest difference today from our last few games was we just didn't make many mistakes on defense.
"When we did make mistakes, Fitzharris did a great job in goal and our defense did a great job of controlling any loose balls in the box."
The win gives MSU three points in the OVC race and puts the Racers squarely in the running for a spot in the conference tourney with three games left in the regular season.
"It seems like, when you're on one of those losing streaks, nothing you do goes right for you," Minielli said. "We needed to have something go right for us because our confidence was really low. As the game went on, we knew had a real shot at getting a win and we found a way. I hope this win can get us going and give us even more confidence for Tech on Friday."
Up next, the Racers go back on the road for a pair of important OVC matchups, first in Cookeville, Tenn., against Tennessee Tech on Friday, Oct. 24 at 3 p.m., followed by Austin Peay on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. in Clarksville, Tenn.
