The Murray State Lady Racers battled at Troy State this afternoon, but were done in by the Lady Trojans' inside game, falling 68-60.
Murray State (3-4) trailed 10-6 early in the first half before going on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to take an 18-10 lead. Junior guard Rebecca Remington had five points in the run, while junior forward Kaleena Miller spotted three and junior guard Brittany Park and sophomore center Lori Trumblee had a bucket apiece.
Troy State (1-3) battled back to a 23-23 tie with 8:45 left in the half, but the Lady Racers pushed back out to a five-point lead. Again, the Lady Trojans brought it back to even, using a 10-2 run at the end of the half to take a 38-30 halftime lead.
TSU opened the second half with a 17-4 run, and MSU could get no closer than the final score.
The Troy State inside tandem of forward Kim McGriff and center Alecia Jones combined for 23 points on 11-for-15 shooting from the field.
"It was very disappointing," said MSU head coach Joi Williams. "We came out defensively and gave up dribble penetration and did not do a good job on offense. The offensive boards is what killed us, and TSU's inside players just dominated. For us to be successful, we have to do a better job of rebounding."
Murray State was led by Park, who had a team-high 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field and from the line. Remington and Trumblee added 10 points each.
Trumblee and Miller grabbed a team-high six rebounds apiece, while senior guard Jenny Bowden handed out a team-high six assists. Bowden and senior guard Megan Fuqua, who started for the first time this season, had two steals each. Trumblee had a game-high two blocked shots for the Lady Racers.
Troy State was paced by 13 points from Laura Lee Holman. McGriff added 12 points, while Jones had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Audrey Muse added 10 points for TSU. Kerri Fiehrer handed out nine assists and had a game-high three steals.
Murray State returns home to face Chicago State on Saturday at 7 p.m. in MSU's Regional Special Events Center.
