MSU (3-2-3), playing its first Big 12 opponent in the program's history, trailed only 1-0 for most of the day before Nebraska, ranked 30th in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, added its second goal in the 80th minute to put the game out of reach.
The Racers played the Cornhuskers (5-2-1) even for the first 24 minutes before NU's Ashley Tenn scored in the 25th minute to give them a 1-0 lead.
MSU kept the margin at just one for the next 54 minutes of action as freshman goalkeeper Annie Fortier was strong in goal turning away 11 shots on the day, while the Racer defense contributed with four saves as well.
Nebraska, which advanced to the Sweet 16 of last year's NCAA Tournament, has won its last three games, while the Cornhuskers' only losses have come to North Carolina, the top-ranked team in the nation, and No. 17-ranked Duke. Nebraska was also picked to finish third in the Big 12 preseason poll of league coaches released on Aug. 18.
Up next, the Racers will travel to Jonesboro, Ark., to take on Arkansas State on Friday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m., before returning home to host Evansville at Cutchin Field on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m.
