The Murray State Lady Racers signed the highest-ranking player in its 33-year history when it penned former Vanderbilt signee Rachel Brockman.
Brockman, a 6-3 forward/center from Noblesville, Ind., was among the top 100 in the nation in several scouting services after graduating from Noblesville High School last spring. She signed with Vanderbilt after fielding offers from Iowa, Texas, Indiana and Michigan State.
Brockman will begin play after the end of the Fall 2004 semester, and has 3-1/2 seasons of eligibility at Murray State.
"We are extremely excited to have her join our program," said MSU head coach Joi Williams. "There is no question that she is going to bring a lot both offensively and defensively. Coming from the Southeastern Conference, that is a testament to her talent level. She will be very successful here at Murray State and in the OVC."
Brockman was named to the 2003 McDonald's All-American Dream 100 and the 2003 Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention Team. She was a Street & Smith All-America Honorable Mention in 2001 and 2002.
Brockman earned 2003 All-Metro and All-Hoosier Crossroads Conference honors with 13.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game in her senior year at Noblesville. She also claimed 2.4 blocks and 1.4 assists per game that season. She attended Cathedral High School in Indianapolis for her first three prep seasons, helping CHS to the 3-A state title in 2000 and 2001. Cathedral compiled a 77-5 (.939) record in Brockman's three seasons there, including a 56-2 (.966) mark in her first two seasons. In her junior season -- her last year at Cathedral -- Brockman averaged 14.7 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
"It feels good to come to Murray State," Brockman said. "I'm really excited about joining the team and this coaching staff. I think this coaching staff will help turn this program around."
Brockman was named to the honor roll in all four years at high school. Her brother, Zach, was the No. 1 high school singles tennis player as a junior and was a member of Indiana's No. 1 doubles team as a senior. Brockman has not yet declared a major, but is interested in studying business.
