Racers shut out at Eastern Illinois 2-0

The Murray State women's soccer team's defense held host Eastern Illinois to only five shots on goal, but the Panthers were able to get two past MSU sophomore goalkeeper Annie Fortier in the Racers' 2-0 loss this afternoon in Ohio Valley Conference action.

EIU (8-4-2, 4-1-1 OVC) outshot Murray State (6-8-0, 3-2-0 OVC) 21-8, 9-3 in the first half and 12-5 in the second.

The first half was a scoreless tie until EIU's Michelle Steinhaus put in her fourth goal of the season on a pass from Trisha Walter, booting it in from the left side with 2:54 left in the half.

Steinhaus struck again in the second half in the 64th minute, taking a corner kick from Rachel Dorfman in the box.

Senior forward Theresa Reedy led the Racers with three shots, while sophomore midfielder Laura Oppegard had MSU's sole shot on goal.

Steinhaus led all players with five shots, and she and Dorfman had two shots on goal apiece.

In goal, Fortier (5-5-0, 3-2-0 OVC) turned away three saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes in the net. For Eastern Illinois, Tiffany Groene (8-4-2, 4-1-1 OVC) took the win, facing no shots in 67:20 in goal. Lindsay Dechert played the final 22:40 in goal, turning away one save.

Murray State visits Southeast Missouri State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
