Remington named Scholar-Athlete

Lady Racer Rebecca Remington was named an Ohio Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete for the 2004-05 school year by the league office this afternoon.
A senior guard from Scandinavia, Wis., Remington was one of six student-athletes across the conference to be named to the honor. The six winners were selected from a group of 17 finalists by a vote of the OVC faculty athletics representatives.
Winners of the prestigious OVC Scholar-Athlete Award must have performed athletically with distinction, earned at least a 3.25 grade-point average and conducted themselves in a manner which has brought credit to the student-athlete, his institution, intercollegiate athletics and the OVC.
Remington was the 2001-02 OVC Freshman of the Year. She missed nine games of her sophomore season due to injury, but came back strongly last season for the Lady Racers, averaging 10.4 points per game and sinking 82.4 percent of her free throws. In her three seasons, she has a 78.9-percent free-throw percentage.
In the classroom, she holds a cumulative 3.97 grade-point average in business administration. She is a two-time OVC Medal of Honor winner with the highest GPA in her sport in the conference and a three-time OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient.
Other honorees included Jennifer Cross, women's soccer, Southeast Missouri State; Erica Gerth, women's volleyball, Eastern Illinois; Aaron Grobengieser, men's track and field, Eastern Illinois; Brady Wahlberg, football, Tennessee-Martin; and Brian Whitehead, men's cross country and track and field, Southeast Missouri State.
Other nominees were rifler Robert Purdy of Murray State; Julie Burkhalter and Levi Carmichael of Austin Peay; Wendee Embry and Allen Evans of Eastern Kentucky; Jennifer Kennedy of Morehead State; Bryan Baddorf and Lindsay Shanks of Samford; Rachel Callahan of Tennessee-Martin and Eric Anderson and Elizabeth Engel of Tennessee Tech.
Remington and the Lady Racers open their 2004-05 campaign on Friday and Saturday at the Moran Realty Classic in Chicago, Ill. Murray State opens on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against No. 20 DePaul, then will face either Southern Callifornia or Massachusetts on Saturday.
