Lady Racers fall at No. 20 DePaul

The Murray State Lady Racers opened their season against a daunting opponent, No. 20 DePaul, on its home floor, falling to the tournament host Blue Demons 96-58 in the first round of the Moran Realty Classic in Chicago, Ill.
Murray State will face Massachusetts (0-1) tomorrow (Saturday) at 5:30 p.m. The Minutewomen lost to Southern California 54-49 in the first game of the tournament played this evening.
Tonight, DePaul started out on fire, scoring the first eight points of the game and pushing out to a quick 16-2 lead in the first five minutes. The Blue Demons (1-0) took a 56-27 halftime lead. DePaul outscored MSU 40-31 in the latter half.
Murray State was led by senior guard Rebecca Remington, who scored 22 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 night from behind the arc.
Sophomore guard Gerraca Matthews bolstered the team from the free-throw line, hitting all five free-throw attempts.
Senior forward Kaleena Miller had a team-high eight rebounds, while Remington and Matthews had five apiece. Remington handed out a team-high three assists and swiped a co-game-high four steals.
Both teams played an up-tempo game throughout, leading to early-season-style turnovers for both teams. MSU had 30 miscues, while DePaul had 23.
For DePaul, Charlene Smith led five players in double-figures with 20 points and had team-highs with six assists and four steals. Khara Smith added 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Jenna Rubino, Allie Quigley and Jarietta Benton each put in 12 points. Rubino added nine rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Blue Demons, while Erin Carney had seven rebounds. Jenni Dant also handed out five assists.
