Lady Racers beat UMass 56-50, Remington named to all-tournament

The Murray State Lady Racers picked up their first win of the season, knocking off Massachusetts 56-50 tonight in the consolation game of the Moran Realty Classic in Chicago, Ill., hosted by tournament champion DePaul, which beat Southern California 99-77 for the title.
Senior guard Rebecca Remington was named to the All-Moran Realty Classic Team, averaging 19.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 4.0 steals and hitting 48.6 percent of her shots from the field.
Against UMass, the Lady Racers trailed 26-21 at halftime, the Minutewomen's largest lead of the game, but opened the second half on an 18-5 run, capped by a jumper by junior forward Jessica Hirsch to give MSU a 39-31 lead with 13:40 left in regulation.
Murray State (1-1) got out to a 50-40 lead when Remington hit a lay-up with 6:23 left, but Massachusetts (0-2) would not go quietly, going on a 9-2 run of its own, closing to within 52-49 with 2:28 remaining. The Lady Racers scored four of the last five points of the game to seal the deal on two free throws by freshman center Katie Willinger and another lay-up by Remington.
Hirsch led all scorers with 24 points on 10-for-19 shooting from the field and a 6-for-9 night inside the arc, while Remington put in 17 to go with seven rebounds, three assists and a game-high four steals.
Sophomore guard Ashley Hayes had game-highs with nine rebounds and five assists, while freshman guard Shaleea Petty also handed out three assists for MSU.
For Massachusetts, Katie Nelson had team-highs with 12 points and three steals, while Edris Bailey had a team-high six rebounds.
Murray State opens its home schedule on Tuesday with a game against Northern Iowa as part of a women's/men's double-header. Tipoff for the Lady Racers is at 5:15 p.m.
