Lady Racers tarnish Goldstar in first exhibition of the season

The Murray State Lady Racers used a strong defense and solid offense in the first half to take a 44-32 lead and was able to hold off a late charge by visiting St. Louis Goldstar in the second half for the 85-80 MSU win tonight.
The game was the first exhibition game of the 2004-05 season for the Lady Racers.
Against St. Louis Goldstar, five Lady Racers scored in double-figures, led by freshman guard Shaleea Petty, who put in a team-high 17 points and had a game-high five steals to go with four assists.
Murray State saw Goldstar take a 13-10 lead after seven minutes of play, then went on an 8-0 run on back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore guard Ashley Hayes and junior forward Jessica Hirsch and a bucket by senior forward Kaleena Miller, taking an 18-13 lead.
The Lady Racers were able to push that lead out to as much as 13 points, 32-19, and settled in for the 44-32 halftime lead.
In the second lead, Murray State had its largest lead of the game, 66-50, midway through the second half, but Goldstar started chipping away at it, cutting it to 67-60 three minutes later, and down to 73-69 with 3:31 left.
At that point, MSU scored five straight points on a three-pointer and back-to-back free throws from senior guard Rebecca Remington to keep Goldstar at arm's length for the rest of the game.
Remington added 16 points for Murray State, while sophomore guard Gerraca Matthews put in 13, going 5-for-6 from the line. Hirsch scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go with four steals, and Hayes put in 10 points and had a co-game-high six assists to go with four steals.
Remington and Miller each grabbed six rebounds, while Hayes had five. Freshman guard Alaina Lee handed out three assists for the Lady Racers.
For Goldstar, "Stretch" James led all scorers with 36 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.Yen Quach and Aimee Michelson added 16 points apiece. Lynette Mund had a co-game-high six assists, while Quach had a team-high three steals.
The Lady Racers finished the night shooting 46.4 percent (32-for-69) from the field, 54.5 percent (24-for-44) from inside the arc. In the first half, MSU hit 50 percent from the field (19-for-38), 55.6 percent (15-for-27) from two-point range.
Murray State had 17 turnovers to Goldstar's 26, but were out-rebounded 48 to 35.
Goldstar shot 44.3 percent (31-for-70) from the field, but was bolstered by 48.6-percent shooting (17-for-35) in the second half.
Murray State will host Blue Chip All-Stars on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. in its second and final exhibition game of the season.
