Guard Stacy Holmes -- who played for Murray State from 2000-02 and 2003-04 -- became the first Lady Racer drafted by an American professional league when she was picked in the fifth round of the National Women's Basketball League draft by the Dallas Fury yesterday.
Dallas won the 2004 league championship tournament last April in its first season of play, finishing the regular season at 14-7, just one game behind first-place Colorado. The Fury beat Colorado in the tournament's championship game.
Dallas is coached by former Olympian and professional player Nancy Lieberman, who also serves as an analyst for ESPN. The Fury is one of six franchises in the NWBL, including Colorado, Chicago, Birmingham, Lubbock and San Jose.
In the 2004 draft, Dallas also drafted Kayte Christensen of UC-Santa Barbara, Chandi Jones of Houston, Jia Perkins of Texas Tech and Amber Obazze of Louisiana Tech. The team also features former Olympian Sheryl Swoopes, the 2001 ESPY winner for Professional Women's Player of the Year. Holmes was one of four guards taken by the Fury in this year's draft.
Holmes led Murray State last season in rebounding (6.9 per game), shooting percentage among players with more than 200 attempts (.461), baskets (142), blocked shots (30) and steals (47), and was second with 12.7 points per game.
Holmes called getting drafted "an early Christmas present." The 2005 NWBL season runs from Jan. 15 through March 26.
