Sophomore guard Ashley Hayes was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, according to a release issued by the league office this afternoon.
Hayes, a 5-9 native of Kokomo, Ind., scored a career-high 29 points in Murray State's come-from-behind 60-59 win at Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday. She also tied the school record for three-pointers made in a game, hitting eight treys to tie the mark set by Megan Fuqua at Tennessee Tech on Feb, 12, 2004.
The Lady Racers (3-2) closed the game at UALR with an amazing 17-4 run over the last 1:38, with 12 of those points coming from Hayes. Hayes was 10-for-18 from the field and 8-for-14 from three-point range.
This is the second straight week for a Lady Racer to earn OVC Player of the Week, the first time that has ever happened for Murray State since the weekly honors began in the 1978-79 season. Last week, senior guard Rebecca Remington earned the honor. This marks the first time that Murray State has had back-to-back OVC honors since earning four consecutive Freshman of the Week honors in the 2001-02 season (Remington, Brittany Park).
Murray State hosts UNC Charlotte (6-0 prior to tonight's game) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at MSU's Regional Special Events Center. The 49ers were ranked 22nd out of 328 teams in last week's Sagarin Ratings.
