The Murray State women's golf team fired a second round 315, the low round of the tournament through two days, to earn an 11-stroke lead going into tomorrow's final round of the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Championship at the 5,817-yard, par-72 course at the Country Club of Paducah (Ky.).
The final round of women's action in the 54-hole event will begin on Wednesday at 11 a.m. CT, while the first MSU player will begin at 12:20 p.m.
The Lady Racers, looking for their third straight OVC title and sixth overall, were 13 shots better than first round leader Tennessee Tech during the second day of play. MSU leads the way with a 325 - 315 = 640, while TTU is second with a 323 - 328 = 651. OVC newcomer Jacksonville State is third in the field of eight teams with a 327 - 334 = 661, while Eastern Kentucky is fourth with a 334 - 342 = 676.
"Obviously, it was a pretty good day for us," said 11th year MSU head coach Velvet Milkman. "We closed out the day with some pretty good golf. I hope we can continue to handle everything the way that we during the first two days."
Through 36 holes, MSU is led by senior Cuyler Hedley, who sits alone in second in the individual standings after a second round 76. The native of Cobourg, Ontario and the 2002 OVC Golfer of the Year has a two-day total of 155, just one shot behind second round leader Julie Smith of Tennessee Tech.
"I was 2-under-par over my last four holes, so I'm pretty pleased with how I finished today's round," said Hedley. "Hopefully, we can put together another good round of golf tomorrow."
Senior Nikki Orazine, a native of Paducah, sits alone in third after an 80 - 77 = 157, while MSU junior Ashley Kelbough of Victoria, B.C., is tied for fifth place in the field of 40 golfers with an 82 - 80 = 162.
