Struve's bending corner kick gives Racers 1-0 win over Valpo

In each of Murray State soccer's previous meetings with Valparaiso, the Crusaders came away with 1-0 wins, but it was the Racers who pulled out the 1-0 win on an unlikely goal.

Freshman Sara Struve made a corner kick that bent around a pack of players in front of Valpo's goal and into the net for the game's only score with 11:32 left in regulation.

Sophomore goalkeeper Annie Fortier (1-1-0) picked up her second career shutout, knocking down eight shots on goal for the win.

"Valparaiso is a very good team," said MSU head coach Mike Minielli. "Every time we play them, it's a one-goal game. They rae very feisty and are well organized.

"We're really happy with the result, but we didn't finish very well, but at least we got a lot of chances. I'd rather have a lot of chances than none. We knew we had to have a good defense and be organized and take the goal when it comes.

"I'm really pleased with our defense today," he said. "If we had played defense like this last week, we wouldn't have lost. This was a huge improvement over last week."

Murray State next takes part in the Skyhawk Invitational at Martin, Tenn. The Racers face Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday at 2:30 p.m., then take on Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday at noon.
