Murray State Athletics is lending a helping hand to Murray's "Make A Difference Day." The Racers are giving away 500 children's tickets for Murray State's Saturday double-header against Eastern Kentucky to be passed out as a thank you while residents come through the line to throw away unwanted items.
The 49th Make A Difference Day is this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of MSU's Roy Stewart Stadium.
Make A Difference Day is a quarterly event in which residents can properly dispose of waste, including used motor oil. Residents can also drop off recyclable materials such as newspapers and all other paper products. In addition, plastics, aluminum cans, glass, ink jet cartridges, eyeglasses, tin cans and clothing will be collected.
Residents are also welcome to bring important documents and have them shredded for no charge.
Murray State interim athletics director Kenny Roth is happy to be involved.
"This is so important for our community," Roth said. "Just think of all the liquids and materials that have been properly disposed of over the years. It's a wonderful thing to be involved with."
Bill Wells has led Make A Difference Day since its inception in 1982.
"We have held these events free of charge at Roy Stewart Stadium, and it's a perfect venue," Wells said. "We've had total cooperation from MSU, and that's what makes it work."
Wells said that it takes about 200 volunteer hours to make the event go, and that people are encouraged to help if they can.
Residents can expect to get through the line in about seven minutes.
Look at the amazing amount of material that has been collected at the previous 48 Make A Difference Day events:
1,671 tons of paper
10,265 gallons of used motor oil
6 tons of clothing
$10,000 worth of aluminum cans
162 cell phones
700 ink jet cartridges
Local organizations including Big Brothers/Sisters, CASA, Lions Club, Watch Center and the Resource Centers of Murray and Calloway County also benefit from Make A Difference Day.
The next Make A Difference Day is March 12.
