The Racers (1-5-1) got on the board early in the first period when Melissa Curry scored off a corner kick in the 8th minute. Sara Struve and Jessica Fioranelli assisted on Curry's first goal of the season. MSU took its 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
The Jaguars (2-4-1) came out firing in the second period and scored twice in the opening 12 minutes to take a 2-1 advantage.
"A lot of stuff we did today was good, but we just came out flat for the first 20 minutes of the second half," said Murray State Head Coach Mike Minielli.
In the 51st minute, IUPUI's Stacy Downing took a pass from Angie Pilat on the right side and beat MSU goalkeeper Heather Jones from 10 yards straight out. Less than eight minutes later, at the 57:12 mark, Pilat scored a goal of her own to put the visitors out in front.
Murray State regained its composure and found the net just over three minutes later to tie the game. Krista Llewellyn's first shot attempt near the left post was blocked by IUPUI keeper Sarah Webster but Llewellyn got her own rebound and fired it back for the tying score in the 61st minute. The goal was the first of the season for the freshman from Island Lake, Ill.
The momentum swung back to the home team for the remainder of regulation, but the Racers could not notch the go ahead goal. Late in the second period, MSU appeared to take the lead, but what would have been the game winning goal was waved off due to an offsides penalty.
The game stats were nearly as even as the score. Each team finished with 17 shots and seven shots-on-goal. Both squads totaled five saves and IUPUI held a slim 9-8 advantage in corner kicks.
Jones made her first appearance of the season for the Racers and played the entire 110 minutes in net. The junior stopped five shots. Webster and Jessie Mann split time in goal for the Jaguars. Mann started and played the first 45 minutes in addition to the 20 minutes of overtime play, finishing with four saves and one goal allowed. Webster gave up one goal and made one save while playing the entire second period.
Curry and Llewellyn each led MSU with five shots attempted. Mia Moody finished with a game-high seven shots for IUPUI.
"Our offense was good today but our defense was average," said Minielli. "When we start conference play, our offense and defense will have to come to play on the same day."
The Racers will begin Ohio Valley Conference play on Friday when they travel to Clarksville, Tenn., to face Austin Peay at 7:00 p.m.
