MSU Baseball Shows Promise in Navy-Gold Series

The Murray State Baseball Navy-Gold series is the highlight of the fall workout schedule and this best two-of-three series showcased an improved Breds squad over the weekend. MSU has 15 new players on the roster for the 2007 season. The Gold squad coached by MSU assistant coach Brian Hicks came from behind to take game one 4-2 with four runs in the last inning. The Blue squad coached by MSU assistant coach Paul Wyczawski took game two 6-3 on the arm of Lucas Allen, but the Gold squad came back to claim the rubber game 7-1 and won the series two games to one.
Game 1

Trailing 2-0 in the final inning, the Gold squad scored four times for a 4-2 win. Navy pitcher Michael Perconte struck out nine on four hits in five innings. Jon Newton went four innings for the Gold giving up three hits and striking out four. Seth Hudson went 3-3 and Daniel Miller went 3-4 for the Gold team.
Game 2

The Navy team scored two runs in the first off of Marc Harmon and added two more for a 4-1 lead in the third. The Gold team plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 5-3 game but could never get any closer in a 6-3 final. Lucas Allen got the win giving only one run on four hits over five innings of work. Navy hitter Austin Swain went 2-4 as did Tyler Pittman. Andrew Cella was 3-3.
Game 3

The Gold team jumped in front with four runs in the first against Jacob Donze and won the third and deciding game 7-1 to take two of three in the series. The Gold was aided by two walks and two HBP's. Daniel Calhoun went 6 1/3 innings for the Gold to get the win on four hits with three strikeouts. Donze went four innings giving up two hits. Justin Yount went 3-3 for the Gold while Jason Payton added a triple that traveled more than 400 feet from home plate and hit the 20-foot high batters background fence in center field. Andrew Cella added a double for the Navy team.
Several MSU pitchers fared well in relief roles in the Navy-Gold scrimmage. Gold pitcher Dan Harris gave no hits and no runs in 2 1/3 innings, while Anthony Stacy also of the Gold pitched 2 1/3 with no runs on three hits. Bryan Baldini made appearances in all three games for the Navy squad and gave up no runs or hits in 2 1/3.
MSU Baseball will now go into the winter with thoughts set on the 2007 season. The Breds will open with five straight games on the road; at
