Several teams, including the Racer women's golf team, have already turned in balls and markers and all other teams are asked to get the toys to their SAAC representative by Dec. 1.
Balls and washable markers were chosen for the student-athletes to purchase because every child loves to play with balls at almost any age and for school-aged children who had new markers at the start of the school year, those are probably wearing out and running dry by now and they will need a new set. These two items can be easily purchased for a low cost so everyone can participate in the giving.
“This activity is a great opportunity for the Racers to give back to young children," said SAAC President and Women's Tennis player Rachael Lask. "We were all fortunate enough growing up to have access to sports balls. It was something we used to develop our skills and creativity."
"I know a lot of athletes who said that they sometimes didn't have access to the fancy sports equipment or didn't have the chance to go to the necessary fields for their sport. However, the thing that allowed them to develop into young athletes was the access they had to balls. Anytime you are playing with a ball, whether it be in your back yard or at school, you are developing your hand-eye coordination and confidence."
"The markers we feel are another way a child can express themselves. Not only can being an athlete give a young person confidence but also being able to show off their creativity will allow them to express themselves."
