2/1/2006 6:00:00 AM | General
As part of its celebration, Murray State will have a reception in the Curris Center for all of its current female athletes. The MSU Women's Center is helping with the reception, which will feature a slide show of those athletes in competition.
The MSU athletics department has invited all high school sports teams from the region and local middle school teams to the Lady Racer basketball game on Saturday against Jacksonville State. These sports teams will be wearing their team apparel that evening.
Display tables will also be set up on the upper concourse of the Regional Special Events Center featuring several aspects of Murray State women's athletics.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) was chartered by Congress in 1986 to honor female athletic achievement and recognize the importance of sports and fitness participation for all girls and women. The day is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Hyman died of Marfan's Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since then, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
