Murray State Athletes celebrate National Sportsmanship Day

On Tuesday, March 7, Murray State student-athletes will be speaking to various local schools in recognition of National Sportsmanship Day.

“March 7^th will be a national day for sportsmanship,” said former Murray State soccer player Lisa Pfeiffer, who is heading up the SAAC (Student-Athletes Advisory Council) event. “We are going to elementary schools and middle schools to promote sportsmanship. Sportsmanship should be shown not just by student-athletes, but in P.E. classes, intramural's, and by the fans who watch sports.”

In collaboration with SAAC, this day is also being sponsored by the CHAMPS/Life Skills program, which honors the commitment to personal development of student-athletes, reminding student-athletes and future student-athletes to keep sportsmanship in mind.

“We see so much poor sportsmanship in professional teams, and that only seems to get the media's attention,” said Rosanne Radke, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Coordinator at Murray State. “It's important, not only for college student-athletes, but for anyone who competes, to be reminded of what good sportsmanship is and how to show it. National Sportsmanship Day is something that we all need to be reminded of.”

After the Murray State student-athletes have completed their tour of the local schools, former St. Louis Blues star Rob Ramage will speak at the Freed Curd Auditorium in the I&T Building at 5:30 p.m.

Ramage has been a financial consultant with A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. since 1994, and played professional hockey from 1978 to 1994, including playing over 1,000 games in the National Hockey League.

The first overall draft choice of the NHL's Colorado Rockies (currently the New Jersey Devils) in 1979 NHL Entry Draft, Ramage's illustrious career includes two Stanley Cup championships (Calgary Flames in 1989; Montreal Canadiens in 1993) and four All-Star Game appearances.

Ramage played for the Rockies, the St. Louis Blues, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Flames, the Minnesota North Stars, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Canadiens, and the Philadelphia Flyers in his 16-year NHL career.

Ramage now serves as President of the St. Louis Blues Alumni, while also serving on the Board of Trustees for the Fourteen Fund, and he is also a board member of the St. Louis Amateur Blues. A former Vice President of the National Hockey League Alumni Association, Ramage now spends his time as a youth hockey coach in St. Louis, which he has done since 1994.

Ramage's daughter, Jaclyn, is a sophomore midfielder for the Murray State soccer team.

After the speaker, Pfeiffer and the other SAAC members will present a sportsmanship award to one Murray State student-athlete, with another award going to the Murray State all-sportsmanship team.

“All head coaches are nominating one player from their team, and the 20 members of SAAC will nominate an all-sportsmanship team,” Pfeiffer said. “We will then give a sportsmanship award to one individual athlete and one team as a whole. Sportsmanship is our number one thing we athletes abide by on the field. We want to bring a lot of attention to sportsmanship.”
