Practice 9-MSU Spring Football

For the past several seasons, most of the Racers kicking duties have been handled by hometown products from Murray High School. Gary Crass enters the spring workouts on top of the depth chart at place kicker.
“This spring, the practices have been a whole lot more intense and more fast-paced,” the senior graphic communications management major said.
Following in the footsteps of former Murray State kickers who attended MHS, Chris Dill, Greg Miller, and Shane Andrus, Crass will look to build on his success of last season, when he went a perfect 4-for-4 from field goal range, including a perfect 3-for-3 game in a 27-23 loss at Samford on Oct. 15. Crass hit field goals from 27, 27, 28, and 36 yards last season.
Crass was also outstanding on point after touchdown attempts, going 23-for-25. The two misses came on the first PAT attempt of the season against Mississippi State and the last PAT of the season against Tennessee-Martin. Crass converted 23 straight in the middle.
Crass has several goals heading into the 2006 season under first-year head coach Matt Griffin.
“As a team, we would like to come together as a family,” Crass said. “Personally, I'd like to not miss a kick.”
Judging by the team's hard-working spring and Crass' personal success last season, both of these goals might come true for Crass in 2006.
RACER NOTES: The Racers practiced in full pads today and faced a stiff northbound wind. One drill is called “sudden change”, where every player responds to Coach Griffin's whistle and leaves their individual stations and runs to the far side of the field. The players then scrimmage and face a game-like situation, like a third down and long, or gaining the possession after a turnover.
The Racers have workouts planned both Thursday and Friday at 4 p.m. The team will not practice Saturday and take the Easter weekend off.
RACER FOOTBALL COOKOUT: The Racers spring game is coming up on April 21 at 7 p.m. at Roy Stewart Stadium. The team is having a cookout before the spring game and everyone is invited. The cost is $6 per person and all fans, students and parents are asked to RSVP to Diana Waller, MSU's football secretary. Her number is 270-762-6181.
