The Murray State Lady Racers announced the signing of Jenny Petrie of Louisville's Mercy Academy.
The 6-foot guard finished 17th in the state with 21.2 points per game and averaged 7.5 rebounds per contest. She had 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals -- all team-highs -- in Mercy's Sweet Sixteen game against eventual champion Lexington Catholic, the first state championship appearance for the Jaguars (26-5) since their title run in 1992. She was also recruited by Austin Peay, Tennessee-Chattanooga and Belmont, as well as several other universities.
Petrie (pron.: PEA-tree) was the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches 7th Region Player of the Year, and was named to the all-region first team as well as earning All-Region Tournament Most Valuable Player honors. She was a Courier-Journal All-State Second Team honoree as well as an Associated Press all-state awardee.
"I am excited about Jenny Petrie signing with us," said MSU head coach Joi Felton. "She is a very versatile player who will add some athleticism to our roster. She runs the floor well, she is a very accurate three-point shooter and she can post up. She also plays excellent defense in the paint. There will be a transition period -- like there is for all freshmen -- but I am excited about her making a contribution right away."
"Any dad would be proud to have a kid like that," said Mercy head coach Mark Evans. "She makes good decisions on the court and off the court as well. She really hit the weights hard between her junior and senior years here, and that really made a big difference, changing her from a pretty good player to one of the best in the state."
Petrie will join 2006-07 Lady Racer signees Shanice McElrath of Dyer, Tenn., and fellow all-state honoree Pam Bell of Paducah, Ky..
