The Murray State Lady Racers announced the signing of Jasmyne Thornton of LaGrange, Ga.
Thornton, of LaGrange High School, is a 5-11 guard/forward who was listed among the second Top 20 in the 2005 Blue Chip High Exposure Basketball Camp.
She averaged 12.5 points and 10 rebounds per game last season as well as one blocked shot per contest. Of those 10 rebounds per game, she averaged four offensive boards per game.
Thornton led the Lady Grangers to a 60-13 record over her last three seasons, and was a first-team all-region and first-team all-conference selection in each of the last two years. She was the LHS Academic Award for her team last season, and has won the Iron Woman award for her team in each of the last two years. She has also earned the Lady Granger Award as the best all-around player (on and off the court) in each of the last three seasons.
"We are excited about the addition of Jasmyne to our roster," said MSU head coach Joi Felton. "She is very versatile, and has a very good attitude. She will give us some help in the paint, and her work ethic is second-to-none. She came from a high school program that has experienced a lot of success, and that is important. She is a very good all-around player."
"First, I'm extremely excited for Jasmyne (pron.: JAZZ-minn) being up there with Joi Felton and Murray State," said LaGrange High head coach Mike Pauley. "Joi and I worked together at Florida, and it's nice to send a player to someone I know. I'm also excited that Jasmyne is going to play collegiate basketball at the Division I level at a place like Murray State. She is my first player to make it to D-I. LaGrange has had other girls' players go to Division I, but she is my first as a coach here, so this is a special treat.
"Jasmyne fits all the bills. She is a great student, and she's just a great kid. I coached Ruthie Bolton at Auburn, and I don't know if Jasmyne has the same level of talent that Ruthie did, but Ruthie was a great leader, and Jasmyne is that kind of player. Her leadership skills and leadership on the court help kids focus on what the coach wants. She will be a great addition at Murray State."
Thornton joins 2006-07 Lady Racer signees Pam Bell, Shanice McElrath and Jenny Petrie.
