Lady Racer Amber Guffey was the best freshman free-throw shooter in the nation, according to information released by Portland State University.
Portland State compiled information on freshmen throughout NCAA Division I, and found that Guffey topped the free-throw percentage list, making 86.8 percent of her shots from the charity stripe. That ranked third among all Ohio Valley Conference players and 17th in Division I. Guffey made 79 of 91 shots from the line last season for Murray State.
"Amber was one of the best free-throw shooters in the history of Kentucky high schools," said MSU head coach Joi Felton. "We are pleased with the achievements of all of our freshmen last season, and this is certainly indicative of the level of play that recruiting class is capable of."
Guffey, a guard from Albany, Ky., ranked third in the state of Kentucky in free-throw percentage with a .874 pace in 2004, her junior season. She ranked seventh on that list with an .867 mark in 2005. During that season, she had two long strings of consecutive free throws, making 31 and 30 in a row, which ranks eighth and ninth, respectively, in the state records.
She ranked third in the state with 810 career free throws.
