The Murray State women's cross country team took the crown of the University of Evansville Invitational today, finishing first out of 13 teams today in the 5k run.

The Evansville Invitational served as the Racers' last tune-up before the Ohio Valley Conference Championships on Oct. 27.

The Racers finished with a total time of 1:33:43.49, with an average time of 18:44.70.

Sophomore Taylor Crawford finished in seventh place out of 124 runners for the Racers with a time of 18:33.01, while junior Alaina Zanin finished right behind her in eighth place, with a time of 18:39.49.

Katelyn Jones (18:43.96) continued her strong freshman campaign with an 11^th place finish, with Asenath NaAman nipping at her heels with a 12^th place performance and a time of 18:44.26. Kristen Miller (19:02.77; 16^th place) gave Murray State their fifth top-16 finisher.

Kristin Reffett (20:02.71; 46^th), Ashley Myszka (20:48.08; 61^st), Emily Ormay (21:10.35; 71^st), and Amber Thomas (23:03.07; 102^nd) also all contributed to Murray State's first place finish, the first such finish this year for head coach Dereck Chavis.

Chavis was excited about his team's finish.

"I thought today was a great step in the right direction for our program," Chavis said. "We went into the meet with the mindset that we needed to go in. We went in focused and we were on task, and we came out with a win. We have a much better team than last year and a lot better team than a lot of people predicted, we just needed to put it all together in a meet and we showed that today."

The Racers resume action on Oct. 27 at the OVC Championships, hosted by Samford and held at Spain Park High School in Hoover, Ala.
