Women's Basketball Excited For New Season
10/19/2007 5:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
When last you saw the Murray State women's basketball team, it was in the 2007 Women's NIT after falling in the championship game of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament by the scant margin of 62-60 to Southeast Missouri.
Come now into the present, the first week of pre-season practices, and you will find the Racers back to work. Finishing with one of the most successful seasons ever in MSU women's basketball history at 21-10 overall, 15-5 and second place by one game in OVC play was fantastic -- for 2006-07. Like Pat Summitt getting her first win, like Oprah Winfrey making her first million, like Donald Trump buying his first back lot, the Racers have tasted success, and they want more. They want to go farther. They want to achieve more, and they have begun the road to doing it the old-fashioned way: by earning it.
Hard work brought the Racers into the OVC Tournament finals, and hard work can propel them even further. First-year head coach Jody Adams knows what hard work can do, playing as the starting point guard for the 1991 NCAA champion Tennessee team and four the four-time Southeastern Conference champion Lady Vols. Seeing the Racers put forth this pre-season effort has been satisfying, to say the least.
"I am really excited about this team and the potential that it has," said Adams. "Their work ethic and desire to get better every day has been impressive to the coaching staff. We are looking forward to seeing where the next few weeks of practice will bring us."
Fans will be able to get their first look at the 2007-08 edition of the Racers at the annual Fan Jam, held Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Regional Special Events Center. Admission is free and all in attendance will see both squads scrimmage and there will be several chances for fans to interact with the MSU players and coaches. There will be free giveaways and an autograph session will also be held. Following Fan Jam, fans can make their way to Roy Stewart Stadium to watch Murray State football take on OVC rival Eastern Kentucky at noon.
The Murray State women's basketball team opens its season with an exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 5:30 p.m. against Christian Brothers. The Racers then open their regular-season schedule on Friday, Nov. 9, at Missouri.
