Racer Soccer Sets Record in 2-1 OT Win at UTM

The Murray State women's soccer team ended the regular season Sunday with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory at UT-Martin when Krista Muilkens scored only 33 seconds into the extra time to give the Racers their 11^th win of the season and their sixth Ohio Valley Conference victory, both MSU records.

The 11 regular season wins for MSU surpasses the nine games MSU won in their inaugural season in 2000. The six OVC wins is one better than the five the team in 2005 won. The Racers are 11-7 and 6-3 in the OVC.

MSU head coach Beth Acreman's team has steadily gained momentum since the mid-way part of the season, and has won eight of their last 11 games.

“This was a very tough, hard fought game today,” Acreman said. “After we gave up an early goal, the girls reacted in the right way and finished the game.”

Indeed, when UT-Martin's Jamie Furstenburg scored just 1:05 into the first half, the Racers were down 1-0.

The match stayed that way until the Racers tied it at the 76:22 mark when Sara Struve bent in a corner kick for her first goal of 2007.

The overtime period was only 33 seconds old when by Krista Muilkens scored the winner (her fifth goal of the season) on a free kick from Kara Carlile that Melisa Curry touched through.

The Racers nearly matched the Skyhawks in shots trailing only 13-12 as both teams managed five shots each on goal.

Murray State's Tara Isbell got the win in goal and made four saves.

The Racers are the third seed in the OVC Tournament and will host a game at home at Cutchin Field Nov. 6 against Eastern Illinois. The game time will be announced later.

“This win was a great team effort,” Acreman said. “Now we'll get to work in preparing for the OVC Tournament.”
