Women's Basketball To Tip Off 2007-08 Season
11/2/2007 5:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The anticipation following last year's 21-10 season has been mounting since it ended in the Women's NIT, and now, the wait is over for the Murray State women's basketball team. The Racers open the long-awaited 2007-08 season on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. with a home exhibition game against Christian Brothers.
Murray State returns 10 players from one of the most successful squads in program history, including four starters. Although the one non-returning starter is All-American and Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year Joi Scott, the Racers were without her services in their charge through last year's OVC Tournament, as she injured her knee and missed the last six games of the season. MSU advanced to the championship game of the OVC Tournament and fell 62-60 to Southeast Missouri.
Murray State's 2007-08 squad consists of seniors Alaina Lee, Shaleea Petty, Gerraca Matthews and Angela Brown; juniors Amber Guffey, Paige Guffey, Ashley Hayes and Jessica Jackson; sophomores Pam Bell, Mallory Luckett, Jasmyne Thornton and Kayla Vance; and freshman Tanjala Wynn.
Excitement is also building with the advent of the Jody Adams era at MSU, as the first-year women's basketball coach takes her place on the bench. Adams begins her first season as a collegiate head coach, having come to Murray State after serving as an associate head coach at Southern Illinois, helping the Salukis to the sixth-best turnaround in Division I. Adams brings 13 seasons of experience as an assistant coach and associate head coach, and played four seasons at Tennessee, starting at point guard for the 1991 NCAA champion team.
Murray State begins regular-season play on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Missouri, then plays its home opener on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. against Bethel (Tenn.). OVC play begins on Dec. 6 with a home contest against Eastern Kentucky.
