The Murray State women's basketball team will play its 1,000th game when it takes on Tennessee-Chattanooga at the Lady Mocs' UTC Panera Bread Challenge on Friday. The tournament features four teams that had at least 21 wins last season: Murray State (21-10 in 2006-07), Tennessee-Chattanooga (25-8), Delaware (26-6) and Louisville (27-8). The Racers will play tournament host UTC on Friday at 6 p.m. CT following the Delaware-Louisville game at 4 p.m. CT. The consolation game will be played on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT, followed by the championship game at 6 p.m. CT.
Murray State women's basketball began on Jan. 18, 1929, when the Lady Thoroughbreds hosted Union (Tenn.). MSU lost that game 20-17, but went on to host and win the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament that season.
In the 1931-32 season, MSU was invited to take part in the exclusive eight-team national AAU tournament, which was the national championship tournament. The team decided to decline the invitation due to head coach Carrie Allison becoming ill. No records of the team after that season have been located, and it is assumed the team folded after that season due to factors associated with the Great Depression.
The team was reborn in the 1971-72 season as the Lady Racers under the guidance of former Lady Thoroughbred standout Dew Drop Rowlett. In that first season, Rowlett guided Murray State to wins over Kentucky and Morehead State in the Kentucky Women's Intercollegiate Conference Tournament in Richmond, Ky.
Here is a look at the milestones for the MSU women's basketball team over the years:
