Women's Hoops Seeks To Extend Win Streak
12/20/2007 6:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The Murray State women's team will close out a three-game road swing with an Ohio Valley Conference contest at Samford on Thursday, seeking to go into 2008 with an unblemished conference record.
The Racers (8-2, 3-0 OVC) also hope to keep its current win streak alive. MSU has won its last six games, just two games short of the team record of eight, set at the start of the 1988-89 season.
The game will feature the top two three-point-shooting teams in the OVC, as Samford leads that category with 7.4 treys per game, while the Racers are second at 7.1 threes per contest.
Murray State leads the OVC in all three shooting categories: field-goal percentage (.448), three-point field-goal percentage (.401) and free-throw percentage (.851). The Racers rank second in the nation in free-throw percentage. MSU's 1-2 scoring punch of Amber Guffey (19.6 ppg) and Ashley Hayes (17.7 ppg) remain 1-2 atop the OVC scoring list. Hayes continues to lead the league with 10.6 rebounds per game.
Samford (6-4, 0-2 OVC) was picked second in this season's pre-season poll, but is off to a disappointing start in league play, having lost both OVC games in the Bulldogs' new home, the 5,000-seat Pete Hanna Center.
Murray State returns home to host Alabama A&M on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Regional Special Events Center.
