Sophomore guard Amber Guffey is making a name for herself on the court, but she has also begun to make a name for herself in the classroom. In her first year of eligibility for the honor, Guffey was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District 4 Academic All-America Third Team. She was the only player in Ohio Valley Conference women's basketball to earn the honor this season.
To qualify for CoSIDA Academic All-America, a student-athlete must have played at his school for at least one season and maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0-scale. States in District 4 include Kentucky, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. Only 16 players from the district earned nomination to the three teams, with six players earning spots on District 4's Third Team.
Guffey sports a 3.95 cumulative GPA in physical education and health. She is eighth in the OVC in scoring (13.5 ppg), second in assists (4.29 per game), third in free-throw percentage (.835), third in three-point field-goal percentage (.415), third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.84) and fifth in three-pointers per game (2.10). As of Monday, she ranks 28th in Division I in three-point field-goal percentage, 52nd in free-throw percentage, 81st in assists per game and 88th in three-pointers per game.
"We are very excited and pleased that Amber earned this award," said MSU head coach Joi Felton. "She is a hard worker on and off the court, and is very deserving of this honor. We emphasize both parts of the phrase 'student-athlete,' and having one of our student-athletes earn such an honor is a testament to that."
Last season, Guffey led all Division I freshmen in free-throw percentage (.868) and led the conference with a conference-only free-throw percentage of .902. She also led the Lady Racers with 2.75 assists per game.
