Former Racer standout Ashley Brooke Hayes has been hired as a women's basketball assistant coach at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Hayes will served under head coach Lynne Agee, who is entering her 27th season with the Spartans.
"It's a great opportunity," Hayes said. "I've been very blessed with the way this came about, and I look forward to the challenges and experience this provides. Coach Agee is a great mentor, and it will be fun to learn from her."
Hayes was named to the full-time position just three months after earning her degree at Murray State.
Hayes was a four-year player with Murray State, and quickly became known for her skills beyond the three-point line, setting MSU career records in three-point baskets (143), three-point attempts (417) and three-pointers per game (1.55), finishing her career with a three-point percentage of .343. She also holds the MSU career-best in fewest turnovers per 40 minutes with 2.26, a remarkable feat for a guard.
Hayes holds two of the top four single-season records for three-point baskets and three-pointers attempted, holding the single-season record for attempts with 186 in 2004-05.
Hayes led the nation in three-point shooting over three consecutive NCAA rankings in her sophomore year (Dec. 14, 2004-Jan. 5, 2005), despite missing on her first 12 trey attempts that season. She had a career-high 29 points at Arkansas-Little Rock on Dec. 4, 2004, going 8-for-14 from three-point range, including a 5-for-7 barrage over the last five minutes to push the Lady Racers to a 60-59 win. She missed much of her final season due to a foot injury.
"Throughout my four years at Murray, I came across a variety of coaches who each taught me a lot of things," Hayes said. "I want to thank (assistant) Coach (Rob) Cross, who was with me for all four of my years. He was a great mentor, and I can't thank him enough for what he's done for me. I am thankful to all of my coaches, who helped me get here."
"We are excited about Ashley joining the program," Agee said. "She has a great background coming from Murray State, and the knowledge she has as a former student-athlete will not only benefit our players, but the program as well."
