The Murray State women's cross country team competed in the University of Missouri Cross Country Challenge on Saturday, which featured Missouri and Murray State in a head-to-head showdown.
In the 5k run, freshman Katelyn Jones finished in third place, with a time of 19:02.05, followed by Alaina Zanin, who came in fourth place with a time of 19:12.03. Asenath NaAman took home a seventh place finish for the Racers, completing the 5k in 19:55.42, while Taylor Crawford (20:04.89) finished in eighth place. Kristen Miller finished ninth with a time of 20:25.06, while Kristin Reffett's time of 21:02.46 was good for 12th place. Freshmen Emily Ormay (13th place; 22:30.83) and Ashley Myszka (15th; 24:24.36) posted strong showings for the Racers, as well as Amber Thomas, who finished 16th with a time of 25:28.98.
The Racers finished in second place with a total time of 1:38:39.55, just 59.14 seconds behind Missouri.
"The meet at Mizzou was a great meet for us in many ways," head coach Dereck Chavis said. "The travel and overnight stay at this juncture in the season really allowed the team to galvanize. Our teams are young and it was important that they had the opportunity to spend time together away from the hustle and bustle of campus life."
"The men's team showed improvement in their performance as they tackled a tough course and ran against strong competition. The women also fared very well against a solid Mizzou squad. I am happy with both of our team's performances and all of us are leaving on a high note."
The Racers return to action Sept. 29, when they will travel to Louisville, Ky. at Tom Sawyer Park for the Greater Louisville Classic.
