The Murray State women's basketball team was honored tonight by City of Murray Mayor Tom Rushing, who proclaimed March 2008 to be Racer Basketball Month and gave the team the key to the city.
"We are proud to have the Murray State women's basketball team with us tonight," Rushing said. "You have really done a good job for yourselves, for our city and for your university. This is the first time that we've had this honor for the women's basketball team, and we are so thrilled to do it."
The team was honored by the city for winning the Ohio Valley Conference Championship Tournament and earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"I, H.Thomas Rushing, mayor of the City of Murray, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2008 as Murray State Racer Women's Basketball Team Month in Murray, and call upon the citizens of Murray to help support the team as it represents Murray, Ky., and Murray State University," the resolution read. (A revision of the proclamation can be found at the end of this article.)
After the resolution was read, the mayor presented head coach Jody Adams the key to the city.
"I don't do this often," Rushing joked, as those in attendance applauded the presentation.
"This team has been an amazing group of young women to work with," Adams told those in attendance. "The time and the dedication that they've given -- not only on the court, but in the classroom, representing Murray State -- has been tremendous. As a first-year head coach, and being able to coach such a great group, I have to give all of the credit to them. Yes, we came up with the game plan as coaches, but they are the ones who have to put in the hard work and make themselves champions. This is a fine group of women who will represent the state of Kentucky and the city of Murray. I am very proud of them, and I hope you are, too."
The NCAA Women's Tournament Selection Show can be seen on ESPN on Monday at 6 p.m. Central Time. The team will have a Racer Dance Party at 5 p.m. in the Murray Room of the Regional Special Events Center. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.
