MSU Soccer Blanks ULM 3-0 At Belmont Showcase

The Murray State Women's Soccer team brought home a 3-0 win Sunday over Louisiana-Monroe in the final day of the Belmont University Showcase in Nashville, Tenn.

The Racers evened their 2008 record at 4-4 in completing their second shut out of the season. ULM fell to 3-2.

MSU's defense locked down on the ULM in limiting the Warhawks to only eight shots on the day and two on goal which MSU goalkeeper Tara Isbell saved. Isbell now has two shut outs this season and six for her career.

Racer junior Renta Figueria came off the bench to score twice. The first came in the 44^th minute on an assist by Jenna Fioranelli and the second came in the 88^th minute to ice the game on an assist from Rachel Wright and Sophie Hargreaves.

Sandwiched in between was the first goal of the season from senior Rebekah Clay on an assist from Hargreaves.

The goal was Clay's 23^rd of her MSU career which places her third all-time in program history. She is two goals from catching second place Jackie Thomas who played for MSU from 2000-03.

After dropping the first game of the Belmont event Friday to Western Kentucky, MSU Head Coach Beth Acreman was very pleased to see her team get a win.

“I'm really proud of the way we responded and proved a point to ourselves,” Acreman said. “We reacted the right way after Friday's loss.”

Acreman said the Racers got back to aggressive offensive play.

“We kept the pressure on Monroe from the start,” Acreman said. “As a coaching staff, we are pleased to see our team play with spirit and confidence. We know we have the talent and it seems to be coming together now.”

Figueira and Hargreaves were both named to the all-tournament team.

The Racers are eight matches into the 2008 season and eight different players have reached the scoring column.

MSU will return to Cutchin Field Friday to host Marshall at 3 p.m.
