Racers Look to Future After 2009 Finale

What started out as a very emotional week with the dismissal of its head coach, the Murray State football team went and fought hard against Tennessee Tech in the 2009 season finale, before falling 45-14 to the host Golden Eagles.
The Racers (3-8, 2-6 OVC) came out with a purpose in the first quarter as they answered a TTU scoring drive with a nine-play 80-yard drive of their own. The drive was bolstered by the strong running of senior Charlie Jordan who rushed for 36 yards on four carries, including a nine-yard scamper around right end for the touchdown.
The momentum may have turned just moments later as the Racers attempted a surprise onside kick that was there for the taking, but rolled out of bounds to give the Golden Eagles excellent field position.
TTU (6-5, 5-3 OVC) used the field position to march down the field in seven plays to take a lead they would never relinquish. The drive was just the start of 38-unanswered points rattled off by the Golden Eagles.
The Racers kept it in the family on their final scoring drive as freshman quarterback Casey Brockman connected on a pair of passes to older brother Tyler that covered 27 yards. The drive ended with the younger Brockman finding Marcus Harris in the endzone for a 10-yard touchdown.
Jordan led the Racer ground attack as he rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Brockman finished the game by going 12-for-22 for 122 yards and a touchdown. Harris was the favorite target of the quarterback as he had six catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.
The Racer defense was decimated with injuries and had players playing out of position all afternoon. Erik Fennell led the unit with a game-high 14 tackles. All-America defensive end Austen Lane recorded 10 stops, including 1.5 tackles-for-loss. Tamar Butler added 10 tackles in a very gutsy effort that saw him virtually play on one leg the entire second half.
The MSU community will now await the hire of its next football coach and begin preparations for the 2010 season.
