Murray State got a strong pitching performance from starter Daniel Calhoun and reliever Lucas Allen as the ?Breds defeated South Dakota State in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Calhoun (1-0) scattered nine hits over six innings and allowed three runs, while striking out six. Allen (1) earned the save by allowing five hits and striking out four over three scoreless innings.
The ?Breds (2-0) got on the board in the third inning as Elliot Frey ripped a one-out double into the gap in left center. After a wild pitch, Daniel Hill drove in Frey with a line-drive base hit to left field.
SDSU (0-2) pushed across a pair of runs in the fourth as they loaded the bases with three-straight singles. Stephen Turner drove in the first run with a groundout to first and second run scored on an error.
MSU responded in the home-half of the inning by plating two runs without the virtue of a base hit. Bryan Propst started the frame with a walk and advanced to second as he beat out the throw to second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Tyler Owen. Matt Hon sacrificed both runners and Zach Noonan drove in a run with a grounder to first. Owen came in to score as he hustled home from third on a ball that got away from the catcher.
The ?Breds added a run in the fifth as Hill ripped a two-out double off the base of the center-field fence and scored on Wes Cunningham's base hit back up the middle.
The Jacks got a run back in the sixth as Martin tripled into the corner in right field and scored on Jeff Fisher's pinch-hit single to center.
MSU answered back in the bottom of the inning as Owen started the inning with a double into the gap in right center and came around to score on a passed ball.
Layne Somsen (0-1) took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits over five innings.
Martin led the offense for the Jacks by going 5-for-5.
Hill led the offense with a pair of hits and Owen scored two runs for the second-straight game.
The two teams will close out the series with a seven-inning game approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the first game.
