Murray State scored at least one run in six innings, including a six-run explosion in the ninth inning in handing Memphis a 14-4 defeat Tuesday afternoon at Gagliano Field in Memphis, Tenn.
The ?Breds (3-1) got on the board in the second inning as Bryan Propst was hit in the back by a pitch and Tyler Owen singled sharply to center field on the first pitch. Zach Noonan advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt and Jonathan Craycraft drove in Propst with a groundout to short.
The Tigers (2-2) threatened a big inning in the bottom of the second as an infield single, hit batter and a base on balls loaded the bases with no outs. MSU starter Daniel Huff nearly got out of the jam without any damage as he made a great backhand flip to the plate to get the first out and struckout the next hitter looking. On a full count, Daniel Kaufmann took a pitch high for a run-scoring walk.
MSU regained the lead in the fourth as Noonan laced a two-out triple off the wall in left center and scored when Craycraft went down swinging, but reached first on the wild pitch.
The ?Breds offense came alive again in the fifth as Kyle Tiernan walked on a full count and scored on Daniel Hill's two-run home to left field. Wes Cunningham followed with a base on balls and went to second on a wild pitch before scoring on Owen's RBI single to left center.
MSU stretched its lead in the sixth as Daniel Miller walked and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Tiernan plated Miller with a fielder's choice when the throw could not be handled by the catcher. Tiernan would proceed to steal second and score when Hill's hard-hit grounder went through the legs of the second baseman.
The Tigers got one run back in the sixth as Kaufmann delivered a two-out RBI single to right center.
Elliot Frey added to the lead in the eighth as he started the inning by lining his first career home run over the fence in left center.
After the Tigers pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth, MSU responded in the next inning by pushing across a season-high six runs.
Owen started the frame by singling to short and going to second on the subsequent throwing error. Noonan walked and Owen would later score on a passed ball. Frey would add an RBI single to center and Hill later singled through the left side to plate another run. The second error of the inning scored another run before Propst drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Huff (1-0) picked up the victory after allowing two runs on nine hits over six innings. Marc Ashley (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings.
Owen led the offensive attack with a four-hit day. Hill added a pair of hits and three RBIs, while Frey chipped in with a pair of hits and two RBIs. Tiernan scored three runs in the victory.
