MSU Athletics Excels in Academic Honors Presented by OVC

The commitment to making sure that the student in student-athlete comes first was bolstered today as the Ohio Valley Conference announced is annual academic awards. Murray State had 11 student-athletes earn the OVC Medal of Honor and 104 athletes were named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2008-09 school year. Both numbers are up from the 2007-08 when the MSU earned nine Medal of Honor awards and 87 Commissioner's Honor Roll spots. In addition the Racer men's basketball team earned the OVC Team Academic Achievement Award.
The Medal of Honor is given annually to student-athletes who achieve the highest grade point average, a 4.0 GPA.
The 2008-09 recipients of the honor for Murray State included: Bradley Cobb (baseball); Amber Guffey, Paige Guffey, Rachael Isom and Angela Mullins (women's basketball); Karissa Magnuson and Alaina Zanin (women's cross country and track and field); Tyler Brown and James Stevenson (men's golf); Sarah Seay (women's golf); and Holly Stanek (women's track and field).
Both Amber and Paige Guffey earned their third-straight OVC Medal of Honor, while this is the second-straight honor for both Seay and Zanin.
The OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll award goes to student-athletes that have a 3.25 GPA or better and were eligible to compete for their teams during the season.
“I am proud to see that more and more of our student-athletes are being recognized for the time and effort they are putting into their work in the classroom,” said Athletics Director Allen Ward. “Every one of the 104 athletes that earned at academic honor from the OVC is an example of what we strive for at Murray State.”
The OVC also announced its 16 Team Academic Achievement Awards, which are given to the member institution's team with the greatest percentage of its student-athletes named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll. The Murray State men's basketball team shared the 2008-09 honor with Austin Peay, after the Racers placed three players on the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll.
“I am very proud of the success our players are having in the classroom,” said head men's basketball coach Billy Kennedy. “ Matt Kelly and his support team are doing a great job. ”
